A Your Favorite Fix Won't Kill Your
Negative Feelings - It Feeds Them!

By Gayle North

There has been a lot of talk in the media about living your best life.  It’s becoming more widely known now that it is possible to change your self-concept and limiting beliefs about yourself.  It really is possible to excel in areas of life where you may have felt incompetent before as you learn to feel more confident, happier and more aligned with what you suspect to be your higher potential.  These positive changes can be accomplished through using methods that didn’t even exist 20 years ago.

Behavioral scientists have done enough studies on successful people in all realms of our human community to know how successful people think, feel and motivate themselves.  The programs offered at Positive Change Institute are often the ideal pathway to put new positive patterns and behaviors in motion – to create the motivation to make the changes required to live your best life.

Imbedded in each of your unwanted repetitive emotional and behavioral patterns is the opportunity to grow and get happier by changing it.  Even compulsive or unhealthy behaviors that you struggle against today offer hidden treasures of confidence-building opportunity.

The irony is that when you let go of the struggle against what you don’t want and you learn to accept yourself with all of your foibles you actually become stronger and more confident that you can you can create a better experience of life.

As you begin to discover and appreciate what’s important to you in your life right now and begin to focus your energy and other resources in the direction of your values and goals, it becomes a reality for you.

The attempt to distract yourself from your feelings, or try to kill your negative feelings may cause you to feel out of control as you reach for chocolate or alcohol or a cigarette.  Some people who have worry or guilt about finances will, in the effort to distract themselves or feel better, find themselves out shopping or gambling -  feeling more out of control as they make their problem even worse!  This brings on more self criticism and the cycle continues to perpetuate itself.

You can learn to recognize your feelings, honestly acknowledge them, and deal with them directly so you can be emotionally free of the past compulsive responses. The self criticism, the guilt, the resentment, and the hurt from past events in your life can be released – rather than trying not to notice them.  What is left is your natural positive state of well being.

In a positive state of well being –  you know you can accomplish anything.  You become more creative, you think more clearly, and you are more in command of your own life and behaviors.  Whether you want to release excess body fat or an old pesky habit like smoking or let go of anxiety on the golf course, you can create your ideal outcome.

You can discover resources within yourself that you never knew existed and find your own solutions and calmly and patiently take action on things that you were previously not able to motivate yourself to do.
